I have to hand it to Netflix. They have some of the best shows available right now. I used to set my DVR to catch whatever was on cable, but more recently I have found myself watching the Netflix originals in my free time. If you haven’t seen Narcos or Making a Murderer on Netflix, stop what you’re doing now and watch. These shows are amazing.
Narcos
I’m a sucker for any story about a powerful figure with endless money and power. That’s probably why I have rewatched the Godfather films countless times. The Narcos series features Colombian smuggler Pablo Escobar. Set in the late 1970s, the episodes take you through the rise of Escobar’s empire.
The show has incredible acting and storytelling. I binge watched the first season in about a week (which is saying a lot because I had to watch it after my son went to bed). There are several points where they show actual footage and press photos of the real Escobar, which I found added to the realism. The Brazilian actor, Wagner Moura, looks just like the Colombian king pin.
Making a Murderer
There used to be a time when office chatter revolved around cable shows. When Making a Murderer was released, it seemed like everyone was talking about it. Lunchtime conversations were focused on the finer points of the Steven Avery trial. Radio and TV shows were talking about it. Discussion of the documentary was trending on social media.
I watched all of the episodes in about a week. It was hard to turn off, even when I binge watched late into the night. I don’t know if the guy is guilty or not, but the documentary is fascinating and keeps you on your toes throughout. You really do get sucked in after just the first episode.
Many of the best shows are on Netflix these days. I can’t wait to see what originals they release next.
