It didn’t take long. We were just a few hours into summer vacation when my son uttered his first “I’m bored” of the season. I can’t really blame the kid. His friends are out of town this week and the rainy weather (we live in Seattle) made it gross to play outside. But inside, it was perfect weather for building a fort, playing with the dog, and watching some Netflix.
If your child is dealing with a case of “I’m bored,” it can be cured with these wonderful shows that are perfect for summer binge watching.
Phineas and Ferb The Movie
What could be better than The Disney Channel’s show based on making the most of summer vacation? Having a pet platapus, of course. Phineas and Ferb is one of those cartoons that your child will love, but also has a few jokes aimed at adults who happen to be watching as well. Whether it’s building a giant tree house that transforms into a giant robot or filming a movie or creating a time machine, Phineas and Ferb is full of fun adventures and a delight to watch.
Lilo & Stitch
When you are trying to imagine the perfect vacation spot, Hawaii often comes to mind. The sun, the beach, and the waves are just a click away with Lilo & Stitch. I like this Disney film because Stitch is pretty awesome and it has a nice message about the importance of family.
Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure
This is one of my favorites from childhood. Pee-Wee has his epic adventure as he tries to recover his stolen bicycle and takes a journey to the Alamo. There are crazy truck drivers (who could forget Large Marge), that classic opening scene with the Rube Goldberg breakfast machine, and Pee-Wee’s dog Speck. After you are done watching Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure, check out Pee-Wee’s Big Holiday for more fun.
Minions
When I hear my son laughing uncontrollably from the next room, I know that he is watching Minions again. The movie stars everyone’s favorite banana-yellow, linguistically garbled henchmen from “Despicable Me.” This prequel recounts the story of their villain-worshipping history and is guaranteed to make your children’s sides ache from laughter.
How to Train Your Dragon 2
This is another one of those movies my son likes to watch over and over. How to Train Your Dragon 2 is full of adventure with Hiccup and Toothless. And the father/son storyline is pretty strong with this one, which is why it get my official Dad Vote of Approval.
Summer vacation is a time when things slow down and we stop watching the clock, but that is no excuse for boredom. A great Netflix movie is just a click away. Your child’s imagination will thank you.
